African time is a psychological and cultural framework where the abstract concept of the future holds significantly less weight than the immediate sensory experience of the present.
Fundamentally, it is a manifestation of low future time orientation.
While Western civilization was built on delayed gratification and the meticulous linear tracking of seconds and minutes to build for the long term, African time prioritizes current social engagement and immediate impulses over punctuality or future consequences.
This lack of linear continuity explains why threats of future punishment often fail to deter immediate criminal behavior. If a person operates in 15 second intervals of the now, the reality of a prison sentence or a police officer firing a weapon in the future does not register as a relevant factor to their current choice.
The person in the present perceives themselves as distinct from the person who will eventually face the outcome of their actions. A rape represents immediate satisfaction. A brawl is justified if the current self feels disrespected.
This psychological disconnect shatters the cause and effect chain that high trust, high time preference societies rely on for order.
On a societal level, this translates to an inability to maintain complex infrastructure or long term financial stability. Large scale debt is incurred for immediate status symbols because the burden of repayment is viewed as a problem for someone else in the future. The shorthand of he dindu nuffin stems from this same orientation. In the moment of the protest or the interview, the subject is not currently committing a crime, and therefore, in a mind that only recognizes the present, they are innocent regardless of what occurred moments prior.
George Floyd dindu nuffin at the time he was headlocked. He couldn’t breathe because he was high on fentanyl, but at the immediate time of the headlock the Floyd of half an hour ago was someone else. Right then it was Derek Chauvin’s fault. Not the drugs. Not his past actions. Later, when he died, the western world placed the blame on Chauvin because we’re easy to manipulate. In essence, the Floyd who died was not the same as the Floyd who got headlocked no more than it was the same Floyd who shot up fentanyl that was the actual cause of death.
Westerners often mistake African time for simple laziness or poor planning, but it is actually a biological and cultural divergence in how time is processed. High trust societies require a shared belief that the person you are today is the same person who must answer for those actions tomorrow. When that continuity is broken, you are left with a system that prioritizes the moment at the expense of the future, leading to the systemic dysfunction observable in regions where this orientation is dominant.
Kamala Harris infamous speech about “the passage of time” shows an African who have comprehended that there is a future and that it has meaning, yet struggles with the concept and is trying to talk about it to a crowd who also don’t understand what the consequences of thinking ahead actually means.
Kamala was ridiculed for this speech because we as westerners do not intuitively understand how the African mind works.
Once you understand, everything falls into place.
